Central Vermont Public Service
The Central Vermont Public Service project has been completed on time at a total cost of $11.5 million. The ‘enormous’ synchronous condensers, weighing 60 tons each and supplied by HIEC, improve voltage support and reliability for thousands of customers in the region. They will help maintain voltage along 60 miles of power lines in southern Vermont. In addition, the project will allow a higher penetration of new alternative energy sources, including photovoltaic, wind, and combined heat and power facilities to connect to what has been a weak power system.
CVPS says that the project was unique in two ways: it marks the first time the company has used a public outreach process to address such a major transmission issue; and the condensers themselves are housed in a building designed to look like a traditional horse barn, thus minimizing the project’s impact to the natural surroundings.
